The Best Community Program celebrates mainstream community-based organisations whose programs showcase inclusive practices. NDIS Providers or disability organisations are eligible to nominate only if they are supporting the mainstream community organisation to establish their program.
Finalist Details
SACARE ONCALL's Carers Lounge provides inclusive and accessible spaces for people with disability and their carers at major events. The lounge features modern pods equipped with sensory spaces, height-adjustable tables and hoists, allowing attendees to rest, change and feed in comfort and with dignity. Reliable support with trained SACARE ONCALL disability support workers with experience in neurodiversity are also present. By addressing sensory, feeding and medication needs, the Carers Lounge ensures equal access and a safe environment at events where traditional venues often lack adequate facilities.
The initiative, in partnership with community event organisers, has enabled more than 3,500 visitors across eight major events to enjoy public experiences they might have otherwise avoided. SACARE ONCALL has collaborated with event organisaters for the Royal Adelaide Show, Royal Melbourne Show, Adelaide Fringe and the Adelaide 500 Car Racing, offering flexible payment models like pro-bono agreements, sponsorship arrangements and fee-for-service.
The Carers Lounge, now in its third year, promotes disability community empowerment, inclusion and accessibility, positively impacting event participation and enhancing the overall experience for users. It has led to increased attendance, strengthened community partnerships and set a benchmark for accessibility in event planning, demonstrating a commitment to a more compassionate and accommodating community where everyone, regardless of ability, can enjoy public events equally.
