The Best Community Program celebrates mainstream community-based organisations whose programs showcase inclusive practices. NDIS Providers or disability organisations are eligible to nominate only if they are supporting the mainstream community organisation to establish their program.
Finalist Details
Lightmare Studios Social Games Community is a unique program designed to transform lives through video games. The initiative connects veteran game developers, psychologists and support workers with gamers living with disability, creating an engaging, inclusive and safe environment. The program enhances social skills through activities such as Minecraft, digital art, game design and Dungeons & Dragons, tailored to appeal to participants with a range of disabilities, including Autism.
In the last 17 years, Lightmare has impacted over 1000 young Australians, providing education, entertainment, and employment opportunities. The community has grown from 23 participants to 91 within a year, ranging from ages 6 to 56. Sessions run seven times weekly online, ensuring accessibility for all.
Participants and families often express their gratitude, stating the community offers a sense of belonging, improved social skills and confidence.
